Carp fishing at The Goose Pit

The Goose Pit Sept. 1-8

Friday morning, September 1, was the day we went on another fishing trip with just the two of us. After last year in France, this time we chose a location closer to home, namely the Ganzenkuil near Nijmegen. Once we arrived at the beautiful lake, we decided to first walk around the lake. It turned out we were the only ones on the water, so we had to pick our own spot. Very annoying…

During the round we already saw some carp jumping and on the other side we saw about 5 carp sunbathing. So we decided to set up camp here. The first day we fished a few hours with the rod and managed to catch 2 mirrors! All in all, we were confident, even though the fishing had been erratic the last few weeks. And the weather was just as changeable.

The2nd night at this spot we managed to catch 8 mirrors, 20 pounds being the heaviest. All beautiful fish and decent fighters (be careful with the hard jaws!). Yet we were still waiting for a really heavy fish. Indeed, we knew that there would be some bigger carp swimming from the old stock, but had no idea about how many and how big….

Around 11 o’clock in the morning my little brother Arjen Kooistra got a run on one of the middle rods. This one had not gone off before. My brother was still snoring, so I quickly woke him up because it was his turn. The fish came our way fairly quickly and in the clear water we immediately saw that it was a bucket of a common scale. Unfortunately, the fish also saw us and took off into the depths time after time. After a good 30-45 minutes we were finally able to scoop up this primeval scale, although with a length of one meter it barely fit into the net. With this 44-pound fish, our fishing trip was a complete success! And we also improved the lake record!

Further caught a total of 25 fish, including several more magnificent pangolins of 26, 31, 35 and 38 pounds. The 35-pound pangolin in particular was gigantic in strength. Together we walked over 50 yards in the water after this fish. After walking a little too far, my brother slipped, rod and all, into the abyss 22 feet deep! Fortunately, we managed to hoist it up just in time to finally land this beautiful fish.

Unfortunately, we also had to release 2 or 3 really heavy fish. So we are sure there are more huge pangolin and mirror carp swimming in this water. So all in all a very successful fishing trip on the challenging fishing water The Goose Pit.
