Lake Varlaam is a beautiful mature gravel pit with an abundance of overhanging trees. It was dug in the mid-1990s and later divided into two lakes, Sector A (7 ha) and Sector B (25 ha). Both lakes are a maze of features (plateaus, gravel banks, islands, points and bays) and variable depths, making for interesting challenges. The lakes are managed by two managers who speak good English and are kept in perfect condition. The lakes are partly surrounded by forests and willows that provide protection and privacy. They are packed with zebra mussels that provide carp with tons of natural food year-round and an excellent growth rate.

The fish stock
In Sector A (the small lake), there are about 200-250 common and mirror carp swimming, with the largest being a common carp of about 33.6 kg. Many carp weigh more than 20 kg and most more than 15 kg. Several other large carp are approaching 30 kg.
The much larger Sector B (the big lake) has about 700-750 common and mirror carp, with about 50 carp around 20 kg, some of which weigh more than 25 kg. The record on Varlaam sector B is 30 kg. Last year, there were as many as 355 carp caught over 20 kg! It’s an open body of water with virtually no obstacles and many attractive features, including two large islands and variable depths. On both lakes, the carp are mainly high-shouldered carp with large mouths and large fins. There are also a number of mirrors with a similar shape. The lakes have no crayfish or catfish.

The fishing spots
All anglers receive as much help and information as possible to catch fish. The managers are available at all times and go out regardless of the time, day and night, to photograph all fish weighing more than 20 kg. Boats and bait boats are allowed at no extra cost. All spots are covered with gravel and remain perfectly clean on rainy days. The use of a large unhooking mat or a large inflatable mat is essential, and great care must be taken when handling the fish. No specialized equipment is required; standard fishing gear will be sufficient. A rod pod might be easier to set up on the hard gravel, but regular banksticks are also suitable.

Lake Varlaam Sector A
Has 11 large spots – 14 anglers – 7 hectares
The beautiful spots are spread across a picturesque peninsula with overhanging trees extending into the middle of the lake. See map in the photos. The spots are positioned so that everyone fishes from one shore towards the opposite side. There are no spots on the opposite side, everyone has enough space and can fish without being bothered by neighbors.
Sector A has 11 spots, strategically placed along the edge of the lake, with a maximum of seven anglers, so each customer gets their share of the water. All spots offer anglers many options on where and how to fish. There are many reed beds, overhanging trees, bays, banks, slopes, gravel bars, deep holes, silt beds, and even a sunken island. To prevent overcrowding, management allows a maximum of 7 (seven) spots to be fished at the same time. All spots are surrounded by young poplars and willows, so you can enjoy the shade in summer. All spots are large enough for 2-person bivvies. There are spots created for carp fishing and spots created for feeder fishing.
Carp spots are A1, A2, A4, A6, A7, A8, A9
Feeder spots are A3, A5, A10, A11

Lake Varlaam Sector B
Has 16 spots – 30 anglers – 25 hectares
All spots in Sector B are equipped with electricity. Some spots in Sector B (B8, B9, B10, B11, B13, B14, B15) have comfortable wooden chalets that can be booked together with spots. Most spots are large enough for two anglers with up to eight rods. The spots are very comfortable and many are surrounded by trees that can provide shade in summer. Each spot has access to a large water surface of at least 1 hectare, but often much more.

The facilities
Lake Varlaam is completely safe and maintained and offers excellent facilities, including charging points for mobile phones, bait boats and other electrical equipment, clean toilets and shower blocks, convenient parking, and easy access.
The showers and toilets are only 150 meters away from Sector A and are also clean, well-equipped, and spacious. There is electricity and water (from a source) in Sector A. The managers can help you charge your batteries. All spots in Sector B are also equipped with electricity.

Tactics
Lake Varlaam is a fantastic place to fish. There are so many features in the design
of the lake that no two spots are the same and will test your knowledge every time. Due to the topography of the lake and the amount of underwater features, Varlaam can present various challenges, but skilled anglers will do all ways do well, as long as watercraft becomes an essential part of their fishing.
Although the lake is not large, you need to know what you’re doing to locate the fish. Even if you’ve located the fish in a certain spot and you’re sure the carp are there, it’s possible you still won’t catch them.
Lake Varlaam is not an easy water, as carp fishing should be. It’s also not that difficult and can often be quite generous with big carp and multiple catches in a short time.

All good quality bait will catch, although we can supply a range of very keenly priced Dynamite Baits boilies and pop-ups that can be purchased locally. Large quantities should be ordered in advance.
Rigs don’t need to be complicated, but they do need to be safe. The managers routinely check the rigs and advise on what’s best to use.

1. Rules

You must report to the administrator at the times listed below.
If you are delayed, please contact the owner or us by phone.
Week from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM (7 nights)

Lake Varlaam is an area of natural beauty, and it is important that all anglers respect the environment and the fish. Our goal is to create a relaxing, high-quality location with excellent fishing opportunities. The following rules apply:

Anglers must have their own bivvy, large carp landing net, and weigh sling. Only weigh slings with floating retainers. The minimum landing net size is 42". Only green fishing tents and umbrellas may be used. Bivvies may only be placed in designated areas.
Absolutely no fish may be retained unless specifically allowed by management. Any damaged, sick, or dead fish must be reported to management immediately.
When weighing or photographing a fish, scales, weigh slings, cameras, etc., must all be present and ready for use before the fish is taken out of the water. The fish must remain in the landing net in the water until everything is ready and should be out of the water for the shortest possible time. Fish must not be lifted above knee height. It is not permitted to stand up and hold fish for photography. The fish must be kept as close to the ground and the unhooking mat as possible and returned to the lake in a weigh sling or mat. Large unhooking mats must be used at all times.
Four rods per angler are allowed. More rods are possible at an additional cost and can be arranged on site.
Fishing is only permitted from the swim.
In case of line breakage, the casting weight must detach easily from the main line; this will be checked regularly. Use safety equipment at all times. All weights, beads, etc., must be able to come loose in case of line breakage.
The use of micro barbs is allowed. Barbless, twisted hooks, or bent hooks are prohibited.
The nylon mainline must have a diameter between 0.40 and 0.45 mm due to zebra mussels and gravel bottom. Snag leaders are required. Use 15 m of abrasion-resistant mono or fluorocarbon with a diameter of 0.60-0.70 mm. Leadcore and leadcore alternatives (safezone-style lead cores and tubing) can be used, but these must also be ultra-safe rigs and will be checked by the managers.
Braided mainline is NOT allowed on rods, but it is allowed on spod and marker rods.
Boats (up to 3 meters long), electric motors, and bait boats are allowed, but you must consider other anglers. You can bring and use them yourself at no extra cost. They are also available for rent.
Particles; the use of well-soaked and cooked particles is allowed. These may NOT be prepared in the cabin. Up to 5 kg per day may be used.
Only high-quality bait is allowed - we reserve the right to refuse the use of inferior quality bait on our lake. Absolutely NO tiger nuts or peanuts. Tiger nuts may only be used as hook bait.
Rods may not be left unattended while fishing.
Flexible markers are allowed.
A life jacket is mandatory (bring your own)
Damaging trees and plants is strictly prohibited.
Persons who cause damage to property may be held liable for it.
Caught fish remain the property of the venue and must be handled with the utmost care, No kill

Violation of the above rules may result in immediate departure. This can be decided unilaterally by the owner. Follow the rules so that everyone has a fantastic week.

2. General rules

The spot must be kept tidy at all times. No litter. All waste must be removed from the spot and deposited in the trash bin at the shower building. Anglers fishing in a spot where litter is found will be held responsible for the litter and may be asked to leave.
We want to record the growth of each carp, so please inform the manager of each carp you catch.
Alcohol consumption is allowed but in moderation. Alcohol or drug abuse will not be tolerated. Those found intoxicated will be asked to leave.
Quiet hours are observed from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM. Loud talking and music are not allowed.
Swimming is not allowed.
Open fires are not allowed at the spots. This includes all forms of barbecuing. There are designated barbecue areas near the parking lot.
Once your equipment is delivered to your spot, cars must be parked in the parking lot for the entire duration of your session.
Toilets and showers are available 24 hours a day. Hot water is constantly available. Please leave these areas perfectly clean as you find them.
Management reserves the right to search any vehicle entering or leaving the premises to ensure that fish are not being removed, illegally transferred, or stolen. This right can only be exercised in the presence of the person using the vehicle, but refusal to cooperate may result in the termination of the vehicle owner's rights to fish and/or be on the premises.
All anglers going out on the boat during the cold season (from October 15 to April 15) are required to wear a suitable life jacket. Lake Varlaam or its employees cannot be held liable for any accident and/or injury to anglers or their property, regardless of the cause, while on site. It is the responsibility of anglers to ensure they are protected and aware of the dangers of fishing. All management decisions are final and cannot be appealed.

At all waters mediated by Angling Escapes, you are obliged to bring First Aid/Carp Care and treat the carp with it. All carp remain the property of the venue. Photos taken may be used for publication by the owner and by Angling Escapes.

Neither the manager, the owner, nor Angling Escapes is liable for loss and/or theft of goods or accidents and/or personal injury. Both the manager/owners of the water and Angling Escapes cannot be held responsible for damage or loss of your belongings.
