Carp fishing is not seasonal; it is possible virtually all year round. As long as there is no ice, you can still catch a carp in the winter. In recent years, we have had mild winters, which means we regularly cast our rods in the winter. Carp fishing in the winter requires some adjustments compared to fishing in the summer.
Eating Pattern of Carp in Winter
To catch a carp in the winter period, you have to take a number of factors into account: The water temperature is lower and the fish is less active, which affects the fish’s eating pattern. They eat less, and the feeding period is much shorter. The carp itself is also slower in the winter, which affects the metabolism. The carp’s gastrointestinal tract fills up faster.

Easily digestible boilies
Therefore, use different, easily digestible bait in the winter period. For example, you can opt for corn or PVA with crushed, easily digestible boilies.
Also consider the nutritional value of the bait.
Smaller Hook Baits and other Rigs
For example, use a 10 mm colored pop-up as hook bait, which stands out nicely among the other feed on the bottom. Because the fish is slower in the winter, we also fish with shorter leaders. We do this because the suction power is less than in the summer, and the fish picks up the bait more slowly. This way, it hooks faster, and you reduce the chance of the fish getting away.
Feeding Periods and Spots
Because the carp is less active in the winter, you have to go looking for the fish. The best time to fish for carp is during the day when the sun shines on sheltered spots.
In the winter, carp like to stay near reed beds, fallen trees, warm water discharges, or a bridge. This is an excellent hiding place for the carp.

Carp often stay near a pumping station or bridge in the winter
Also fish at different depths to see at what depth the carp is located. It is easier when you fish on a water where the bottom gradient is reasonably even. For fishing in the winter: if you haven’t caught anything within two hours, move to another spot.
Compact and Light Fishing
Therefore, do not take too much with you during a fishing session in the winter, so you can move easily and quickly. It can also be very cold along the water’s edge, so take good care of yourself. Dress warmly, opt for thermal clothing, and a pair of warm boots is not an unnecessary luxury. Don’t forget to bring food and hot drinks for yourself, so fishing in the winter remains pleasant and a nice challenge.
Have fun and good luck catching!
