Lake Varlaam - Angling Escapes

Lake Varlaam is a beautiful mature gravel pit with an abundance of overhanging trees. It was dug in the mid-nineties and later divided into two lakes, Sector A (7 ha) and Sector B (25 ha). Both lakes are a maze of features (plateaus, gravel bars, islands, points, and bays) and variable depths, providing interesting challenges. The lakes are managed by two administrators who speak good English and are kept in perfect condition. The lakes are partially surrounded by forests and willows, providing protection and privacy. They are packed with zebra mussels that provide the carp with tons of natural food year-round and give excellent growth rates.

The Fish Stock
In Sector A (the small lake), there are approximately 200-250 common and mirror carp, with the largest weighing around 30 kilograms. Many carp weigh over 20 kilograms, with most exceeding 15 kilograms. Several other large carp approach 30 kilograms.

The much larger Sector B (the big lake) boasts around 700-750 common and mirror carp, with about 50 carp weighing over 20 kilograms, some exceeding 25 kilograms. The lake record is 30 kilograms. Last year, an impressive 100 carp over 24 kilograms were caught! It’s an open water mass with virtually no obstacles and numerous attractive features, including two large islands and variable depths. Both lakes predominantly feature high-shouldered, large-mouthed carp with large fins. There are also some mirrors with a similar shape. The lakes have no crayfish or poisson-chat.

The Pegs
All anglers receive as much assistance and information as possible to catch fish. Administrators are available at all times and will, regardless of the time, day or night, go out to photograph all fish over 20 kilograms. Boats and bait boats are allowed at no extra cost. All pegs are gravelled and remain perfectly clean on rainy days. Using a large unhooking mat or inflatable mat is essential, and great care must be taken when handling fish. No specialized equipment is required; standard fishing gear will suffice. A rod pod might be easier to set up on the hard gravel, but regular banksticks are also suitable.

Lake Varlaam Sector A
11 large pegs – 14 anglers – 7 hectares
The beautiful pegs are spread across a picturesque peninsula with overhanging trees extending into the middle of the lake. See map in the photos. The pegs are positioned so that everyone fishes from one bank towards the opposite side. There are no pegs on the opposite side, ensuring everyone has ample space and can fish without interference from neighbors.
Sector A has 11 pegs strategically placed along the lake’s edge, accommodating a maximum of seven anglers, allowing each customer their share of the water. All pegs offer anglers plenty of opportunities on where and how to fish. There are many reed beds, overhanging trees, bays, ledges, slopes, gravel bars, deep holes, sludge beds, and even a submerged island. To prevent overcrowding, management allows a maximum of 7 (seven) pegs to be fished at once. All pegs are surrounded by young poplars and willows, providing shade in the summer. All pegs are large enough for 2-person bivvies. Pegs have been created for carp fishing, and there are pegs created for feeder fishing.
Carp pegs are A1, A2, A4, A6, A7, A8, A9
Feeder pegs are A3, A5, A10, A11

Lake Varlaam Sector B
16 pegs – 30 anglers – 25 hectares
All pegs on Sector B have electricity. Some pegs on Sector B (B8, B9, B10, B11, B13, B14, B15) have comfortable wooden chalets that can be booked along with pegs. Most pegs are large enough for two anglers with a maximum of eight rods. The pegs are very comfortable, with many lined with trees providing shade in the summer. Each peg has access to a large water surface of at least 1 hectare, often much more.

The Facilities
Lake Varlaam is completely secure and maintained, offering excellent facilities including charging points for mobile phones, bait boats, and other electrical equipment, clean toilets and shower blocks, convenient parking, and easy access. The showers and toilets are just 150 meters away from Sector A and are also clean, well-equipped, and spacious. There is electricity and water (from a spring) on Sector A. The administrators can help you recharge your batteries. All pegs on Sector B are also equipped with electricity.

Tactics
Lake Varlaam is a fantastic fishing spot. There are so many features in the lake’s design that no two pegs are the same, testing your knowledge each time. Due to the lake’s topography and the number of underwater features, Varlaam can pose different challenges, but skilled anglers will find ways to succeed, provided bait boats become an essential part of their fishing.
Although the lake is not large, you need to know what you’re doing to locate the fish. Even if you’ve located the fish in a certain spot and are sure the carp are there, you may still not catch them.
Lake Varlaam isn’t easy water, as carp fishing should be. It’s also not so difficult and can often be quite generous with large carp and multiple catches in a short time.

High-quality bait will catch, although we can supply a range of highly priced Dynamite Baits boilies and pop-ups that can be purchased locally. Large quantities need to be pre-ordered.
Rigs don’t need to be complicated, but they do need to be safe. The administrators routinely check rigs and advise on what’s best to use.

1. Rules

You must report to the manager at the times below.
If you are delayed, please contact the owner or us by telephone.
Week from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM (7 nights)

Lake Varlaam is an area of natural beauty and it is important that all anglers respect the environment and the fish. Our aim is to create a relaxing, high quality location with excellent fishing opportunities. The following rules apply:

Anglers must have their own bivvy, large carp landing net, and weigh sling. Only weigh slings with floating supports are allowed. The minimum landing net size is 42". Only green fishing tents and umbrellas are permitted. Bivvies may only be set up in designated areas.
Absolutely no fish shall be kept unless specifically permitted by management. Any damaged, sick, or dead fish must be reported to management immediately.
When weighing or photographing a fish, scales, weigh slings, cameras, etc. must all be present and ready for use before the fish is taken out of the water. The fish must remain in the landing net in the water until everything is ready and should be out of the water for as short a time as possible. Fish must not be lifted above knee height. Standing while holding fish for photography is not allowed. The fish must be kept as close to the ground and the unhooking mat as possible and placed back into the lake in a weigh sling or mat. Large unhooking mats must be used at all times.
Four rods are allowed per angler. Additional rods can be arranged on site for an extra fee.
Fishing is only allowed from designated swim.
The casting weight must detach easily from the main line in the event of a line break, and this will be regularly checked. Safety equipment must be used at all times. All sinkers, beads, etc., must be able to come loose in the event of a line break.
The use of micro barbed hooks is allowed. The use of barbless, twisted hooks, or bent hooks is prohibited.
The nylon main line must have a diameter between 0.40 and 0.45 mm due to zebra mussels and gravel bottom. Snag leaders are required. Use 15 meters of abrasion-resistant mono or fluorocarbon with a diameter of 0.60-0.70 mm. Leadcore and leadcore alternatives (safezone-style lead cores and tubing) can be used, but these must also be ultra-safe rigs and will be checked by the management.
Braided main line is NOT allowed on rods, but it is permitted on spod and marker rods.
Boats (up to 3 meters in length), electric motors, and bait boats are allowed, but you must be considerate of other anglers. You may bring and use your own without additional cost. They are also available for rent.
Particles: The use of well-soaked and cooked particles is allowed. These may NOT be prepared in the accommodation. Up to 5 kg per day may be used.
Only high-quality bait is allowed—we reserve the right to refuse the use of inferior quality bait on our lake. Absolutely NO tiger nuts or peanuts. Tiger nuts may only be used as hookbait.
Rods must not be left unattended while fishing. This helps ensure the safety of both the fish and your gear, and it’s important for maintaining a fair fishing environment for everyone.
Flexible markers are allowed.
A life jacket is mandatory (please bring your own).
Damage to trees and plants is strictly prohibited.
Individuals who cause damage to property may be held liable for the costs.
Captured fish remain the property of the venue and must be handled with the utmost care. No kill.

Violation of the above rules may result in immediate removal. This decision can be made unilaterally by the owner. Please adhere to the rules to ensure that everyone has a fantastic week.

2. General ruls

The fishing spot must be kept tidy at all times. No litter is allowed. All waste must be removed from the spot and disposed of in the trash bin at the shower building. Anglers fishing in an area with litter will be held responsible for the waste and may be asked to leave.
We want to record the growth of each carp, so please inform the manager of every carp you catch.
The use of alcohol is permitted, but in moderation. Abuse of alcohol or drugs will not be tolerated. Those found to be intoxicated will be asked to leave.
**Quiet Hours:** From 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM, silence must be observed. Loud talking and music are not allowed.
Swimming is not allowed.
Open fires are not allowed at the fishing spots, including all forms of barbecuing. There are designated areas for barbecues near the parking lot.
Once your equipment has been delivered to your fishing spot, cars must be parked in the parking lot for the duration of your session.
Toilets and showers are available 24 hours a day, with constant hot water. Please leave these areas as clean as you found them.
Management reserves the right to search any vehicle entering or leaving the premises to ensure that fish is not being removed, illegally transferred, or stolen. This right can only be exercised in the presence of the person using the vehicle, but refusal to cooperate may result in the revocation of the vehicle owner’s right to fish and/or remain on the premises.
All anglers using a boat during the cold season (from October 15 to April 15) are required to wear a suitable life jacket. Lake Varlaam or its employees cannot be held liable for any accidents and/or injuries to anglers or their property, regardless of the cause, while on the premises. It is the anglers' responsibility to ensure they are protected and aware of the dangers of fishing. All management decisions are final and cannot be appealed.

On all venues managed by Angling Escapes, you are required to bring First Aid/Carp Care equipment and use it to handle the carp. All carp remain the property of the venue. Photos taken may be used for publication by the owner and Angling Escapes.
